Shillong: Election officials in Meghalaya are cleaning up the state electoral rolls. The Special Intensive Revision relies on the 2005 voter list as a reference point to scrub duplicates and fix errors. The work is already underway.
People already on the 2005 list get a pass. They just need an extract of their name and a form to stay registered. They do not have to show identity documents again. For everyone else, the rules are strict.
You must be 18 by October 1, 2026, to vote. Booth Level Officers will walk door-to-door to check papers. Applicants need birth certificates, passports, or Aadhaar cards to prove their age. Proof of residence is also mandatory. The Commission stated that any Indian citizen aged 18 or above as on October 1, 2026, who is not legally disqualified, is eligible for inclusion in the voter list.
Tribal areas get extra scrutiny. Officials will check family and lineage records to stop fake registrations. Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi toured Nongpoh and Shillong on Wednesday to check the ground game. He met with local staff to ensure readiness.
Training for staff runs until June 29. Field teams head out for door-to-door verification on June 30. The draft roll drops August 5, with the final list due October 7, 2026. Citizens can challenge the draft once it hits the streets.
