Gangtok: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a formal directive to the Chief Electoral Officers of 23 states and Union Territories, instructing them to finalize all preparatory tasks for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This nationwide exercise is slated to officially begin in April 2026, aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of voter databases by registering new eligible citizens and rectifying existing record discrepancies.

This initiative follows a series of administrative orders dating back to June 2025, which established the framework for a country-wide update of voter records. While some regions have already commenced their revision processes under previous notifications, this latest communication serves to synchronize the groundwork for the remaining territories. The Commission, operating from Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, has dispatched these instructions via official email and speed post to ensure timely compliance by all relevant electoral offices.
