Gangtok: Sikkim government employees have a green light to duck out of work early this month. The state Home Department issued a circular on October 1 authorizing staff to leave their desks at 1:30 pm to catch the 42nd All India Governor's Gold Cup Football Tournament.
Games run from October 5 to 16 at Paljor Stadium. The tournament remains a major draw for the region. Matches attract teams and local fans alike for twelve days of play.
The early exit comes with strings attached. Workers need written permission from their controlling officers before they head out the door. Staff must also provide valid match tickets from the Sikkim Football Association. The circular stated, "Employees must produce valid match tickets issued by the Sikkim Football Association and obtain written permission from their respective controlling officers before leaving office."
