East Shillong MLA Raises Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revision Process

Shillong: East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has expressed serious concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The NPP legislator warned that the current process could lead to the exclusion of indigenous residents who lack formal paperwork, such as birth certificates or caste records.

The administrative ambiguity surrounding the exercise remains a primary issue for the MLA. Lyngdoh questioned the potential reliance on 2005 electoral rolls as a reference point and expressed uncertainty over which documents, including school admit cards, would be accepted as valid proof of citizenship.

The legislator emphasized the practical struggle for citizens who may now need to track lineage through parents to satisfy potential cut-off requirements. Raising the stakes for those without formal records, she asked, “What happens to citizens who do not possess these documents?”

Lyngdoh urged government authorities to ensure total transparency throughout the revision. She emphasized the need for providing residents adequate opportunities to establish their eligibility without facing unnecessary barriers in obtaining official documentation.
