Shillong: East Khasi Hills health authorities issued a harsh monsoon warning today. Seasonal illnesses are spiking. District Medical and Health Officer Dr. K. Lyngdoh identified wild mushrooms and scrub typhus as the top killers in the region. Locals must stop eating all foraged fungi immediately. Changing weather makes spotting toxic varieties nearly impossible.

Scrub typhus is spreading. Mites in tall grass transmit the disease. Field workers and children need long pants, socks, and full-sleeved shirts to block bites. The district faces a broad list of threats. Mosquitoes, water-borne bugs, and food-borne pathogens remain dangerous. Stagnant water is a death trap. Clear out those old tyres and containers now.

The department laid out strict safety protocols. Keep food refrigerated and reheat it to 75°C before eating. Never eat stale or uncovered meals. Wash your hands with soap after using the toilet, handling animals, or prepping food. Boil all drinking water to stay safe. Dr. Lyngdoh emphasized that simple habits save lives. "Most seasonal diseases can be prevented through good personal hygiene, a clean environment, minimising exposure to disease-causing agents, and seeking timely medical attention when symptoms develop."

Waste management remains a priority. Stop dumping trash near homes. Rats love filth. Keep pigs away from residential areas. Never wash laundry or dishes in streams used for drinking. Defecating near water sources is banned. Institutions like schools and offices must purge standing water. Report any clusters of fever or diarrhoea cases to health clinics immediately.
