Shillong: East Khasi Hills district officials launch a pilot rabies prevention drive in Shillong on September 1. The program kicks off at 11 am inside the Deputy Commissioner office. Officials aim to stop human rabies cases by vaccinating stray dogs across urban zones.
The Shillong Municipal Board must supply dog catchers for the operation. These teams will work alongside the District Veterinary Officer to manage the animals. Coordination remains the primary goal. Agencies will link the district police, health departments, and local veterinary staff to pull this off.
Community groups play a big part. The administration invited representatives from Lumshatsngi, Kench's Trace, Madan Laban, Riat Laban, Riat Laban Kynjat Phutbol, Oxford, Lower Lumparing, and Upper Lumparing to join the effort. The Helping Organisation for People, Environment and Animals (HUFAN) will also provide animal welfare support during the rollout.
The district administration stated the initiative aims to "create a coordinated mechanism for tackling the risk of human rabies associated with stray dogs." This pilot project uses animal shots and institutional cooperation to protect the city. Authorities expect the model to grow if it succeeds in these initial neighborhoods.
