Shillong: A Doppler Weather Radar project in Meghalaya hit a dead end. Land ownership disputes in the East Khasi Hills district forced officials to rethink the installation plan. The India Meteorological Department must now scout for a backup location to keep the project moving. Delays are not an option. The radar serves to boost weather forecasting and tighten early warning systems for the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal met with IMD officials to hash out the details. District Disaster Management Authority CEO Shanborlang Warjri attended the session. The original site remains in limbo due to lingering legal ownership issues. Baranwal directed his Revenue Branch to check if they can still acquire that plot of land despite the legal mess.
The radar aims to stop weather hazards from blindsiding the region. Meghalaya struggles with heavy rains that wreck infrastructure and choke transport routes during the monsoon. Officials hope the new hardware will harden the state against these seasonal threats. Baranwal stated that the administration is working to ensure that land issues do not hinder progress, noting, "To avoid further delays, the IMD has been asked to simultaneously look for another suitable location for the radar."
