East Khasi Hills Launches Drug Awareness Campaign with Street Plays and Rallies

Shillong: The Office of the District Social Welfare Officer in East Khasi Hills is leading a series of awareness initiatives to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026. Running under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the program features a Nasha Mukt Saptah that continues until June 26. This initiative, themed Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan—Viksit Bharat Ki Pehchan, focuses on engaging students, local organizations, and village authorities to build a drug-free society.

The district has organized several digital engagement opportunities, including an online e-pledge and a reel-making competition. Residents are also encouraged to register as volunteers via the official portal. Street plays, known as Nukkad Natak, will serve as a primary tool for public outreach. Performances are scheduled across various spots including Don Bosco Square, Motphran, and Laitumkhrah Police Point throughout late June. The awareness campaign concludes on June 30 with a sports event at the Rangdajied Futsal ground.

In a separate effort, the Directorate of Social Welfare and the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission are hosting additional community events on June 20 and 22. These include an anti-drug bike rally departing from the U Soso Tham Auditorium, which will travel through several local towns. According to a statement, these initiatives are "designed to sensitise the public to the dangers of substance abuse and promote a drug-free society through direct community engagement." The series wraps up with flash mobs and road stops scheduled across multiple neighborhoods on June 22.
