Shillong: Addicts have turned Police Bazar into their personal living room. The commercial heart of Shillong now faces a surge in drug abuse. Tourists and locals report constant harassment and aggressive panhandling near the city center. Bus shelters meant for travelers serve as daytime hangouts for those using narcotics.
The Federation of Shillong Hotels sent a plea to the Superintendent of Police. They want cops to stop the rot. The group cites a sharp rise in theft and robbery linked directly to the drug trade. Business owners fear the chaos will ruin the city's reputation as a top destination. The federation stated, "The situation is damaging the image of the state’s premier tourist destination."
Cops show up, but they do not stay. Locals claim patrols lack the backbone to clear the streets for good. Residents are tired of the constant requests for cash. They know exactly where that money goes. Stakeholders want real enforcement to bring safety back to the streets.
