Imphal: At least 22 Tangkhul Naga Meira Paibis, or women torch bearers, were injured during a confrontation with the Assam Rifles in Manipur's Ukhrul District on Sunday. The clash occurred between 3:30 and 4:00 PM across two separate sites, including New Haven near Shokvao village and Finch Corner near Shangshak village.

All 22 injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at the Ukhrul District Hospital. According to protest organizers, the operation took place under the command of Commanding Officer Sunil Singh of the 40th Assam Rifles Battalion. Reports also indicate that Mathotmi Kasar, president of the Katho Katamnao Long, was targeted and beaten by security personnel during the incident.

Viral social media footage shows Assam Rifles members using lathis against the protesters, with claims that multiple rounds of ammunition were fired during the encounter. The tension at New Haven reportedly escalated when local women demanded the security forces vacate an outpost established in their area without authorization. Villagers claim they have made several previous attempts to request the removal of the post from their jurisdiction. Regarding the ongoing resistance, sources stated, "Villagers have previously urged the Assam Rifles personnel to leave their jurisdiction on multiple occasions."
