Imphal: A displaced Manipur Police commando took his own life at the Commando Complex in Imphal West on Monday. The incident occurred at 4.15 pm inside a family quarter. He was attached to the Imphal West Commando unit from the 7th Manipur Rifles. The officer originally hailed from Khumujamba Leikai in Churachandpur district and fled his home after ethnic violence began on May 3, 2023.
First responders rushed the havildar to Raj Medicity Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Medical staff declared him dead at 6.30 pm. Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Imphal Police Station holds jurisdiction over the case.
The death coincided with the final day of the Manipur Assembly session. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam addressed questions regarding the thousands still displaced by the conflict. Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh pressed the government on compensation for lost property. The home minister stated, "the government would examine the issue after completing the resettlement and rehabilitation of the displaced persons." He added that no compensation has reached IDPs for lost movable assets thus far.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh updated the House on the scale of the crisis. Roughly 60,000 people lost their homes since the May 2023 violence erupted. Officials have resettled 36,000 individuals, but 24,000 remain in relief camps. The state continues to provide financial aid to approximately 59,000 displaced people.
