Kohima: Thirty-one people with disabilities gathered in Dimapur on Friday to attend a specialized recruitment drive. Hosted by the National Career Service Centre for Differently Abled at the Assistant Labour Commissioner's Building in Purana Bazar, the event connected local candidates with potential roles at Vishal Mega Mart.
The job fair focused on filling sales executive positions across several Nagaland districts, including Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Mon, Niuland, and Mokokchung. Eligible candidates ranged from those with a Class VIII education and above, with organizers prioritizing applicants with locomotor disabilities.
Deputy Director Dr. T. Mohan emphasized that public awareness regarding employment services remains a hurdle. Since becoming fully operational in 2022, the centre has worked to bridge the gap by encouraging companies to adopt inclusive hiring practices. Abdu Saleem TK, the Head of Office and Rehabilitation Officer, noted that social stigma continues to create barriers, leading the centre to conduct regular sensitization programs for prospective employers.
For the attendees, the event provided a valuable gateway to the professional world. Candidate P. Mukom Khiam expressed optimism about the platform, noting that he had not personally faced discrimination. Other participants shared similar sentiments, finding the event through community groups and computer classes.
Reflecting on her personal journey and the importance of equal treatment, candidate Ngamjon said, "We are only here for a short time, so it would be best if everyone treats all of us equally." The event marked a continued effort to increase workforce participation and advocate for the capabilities of persons with disabilities throughout the state.
