Dimapur Municipal Council Renews Crackdown on Single-Use Plastics

Kohima: The Dimapur Municipal Council has issued a renewed warning regarding the complete prohibition of single-use plastics across its jurisdiction. This directive follows a government notification from September 13, 2024, which continues to forbid the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of these items to promote environmental sustainability.

Despite previous awareness efforts, local authorities report that some shops and residents continue to ignore the ban. In response, the council is launching intensified inspections to ensure compliance. Any business or individual discovered handling prohibited plastic materials now faces immediate seizure of goods and significant financial penalties.

Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kuzonyi Wideo emphasized the need for a shift toward sustainable practices, urging the community to transition to biodegradable or reusable alternatives. He stated that the Council shall "intensify inspection and enforcement drives within its jurisdiction."

The council expects full cooperation from market associations, ward authorities, and the general public to maintain a cleaner city. This directive is effective immediately, and officials plan to use existing government regulations to hold all violators accountable.
