Guwahati: The Dima Hasao Department of Sports honored local taekwondo champions Sunday at the District Sports Office in Haflong. Herojit Jidung, Member of Autonomous Council in charge of Sports and Youth Welfare, led the ceremony. The event recognized Benla Kemprai and Pollabi Handique for their gold medal wins at the 5th India Taekwondo Poomsae National Championship. That event took place at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune, under the direction of India Taekwondo.
These wins earned both athletes spots at the National Training Camp. They are preparing for the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2026 in Chuncheon, South Korea. Both women are third-semester students with extensive medal records at state and national levels. The Assam government hired Kemprai as a Junior Administrative Assistant in the Transport Department last year through the sports quota. Reflecting on the athletes' success, Jidung noted their impact on the region.
Eight additional athletes received a Dimasa Risah for their performance at the recent All Assam State Taekwondo Championship in Mangaldai. Six of these medalists qualified to represent Assam at upcoming national events. Local officials praised the district's growing reputation in the sport.
