Kohima: Residents in Zunheboto are trapped by a digital system glitch. They cannot correct birth dates on official certificates, leaving students and pensioners in limbo. These documents are vital for official paperwork. Locals say the problem persists despite pleas to the Deputy Commissioner for a fix.
K Rhanbemo Kithan, the District Economics and Statistics Officer, blamed the software limitations. He noted that while names and addresses remain editable, the portal locks birth dates after registration. "Our office is not denying any service. Corrections relating to the applicant's name, parents' names and address can be made. However, the online portal does not provide any option to alter the date of birth or the registration number once the certificate has been digitised and registered," Kithan explained.
The department stopped issuing manual certificates on July 1. All records now run through the online portal. Officials urged applicants to double-check every detail before hitting submit. The office charges 200 rupees for new registrations and 100 rupees for updates to cover printing and internet costs.
