Delhi CM Rekha Gupta urges residents to drop plastic bags and join massive green drive

Shillong: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wants citizens to dump plastic bags for good. She marked International Plastic Bag Free Day on Friday by urging locals to swap thin plastic for cloth or jute alternatives. The goal is to slash pollution that hits marine life and the local environment hard.

"On International Plastic Bag Free Day, let us take a pledge that is not limited to just today, but becomes a part of our everyday habits," Gupta said in a statement on X. She wants these small habit changes to build a cleaner capital.

Gupta also started the Green Drive Portal to back the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign. The government plans to plant 70 lakh saplings across the city. Residents can use the new website to book spots for planting, register as environmental volunteers, or grab free saplings from government nurseries. Teams from the Forest Department will even visit homes and schools to provide equipment and technical help under the Vriksh Rath project.

The drive pushes for native species like Neem, Banyan, and Jamun. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that all 70 Assembly constituencies now have categorized sites ready for planting. The government also intends to build 100 Oxygen Parks to further improve air quality throughout the city.
