Shillong: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Eastern Air Command headquarters in Shillong on Saturday, where he praised the unit as an essential pillar of national security. Addressing personnel, Singh underscored the need for strategic foresight and technological agility to manage modern threats, including cyber warfare, drones, and supply chain vulnerabilities. He noted that traditional military preparedness is no longer sufficient to address the complexities of current global security challenges.
During his address, the minister emphasized the importance of Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance, citing the success of Operation Sindoor as evidence of India’s growing strength. He stated, “Through Op Sindoor, we demonstrated to terrorists and their handlers that India will not compromise on its security and sovereignty.” Singh highlighted that the command is a vital partner in this broader vision for national independence and defense capability.
The minister also described the Northeast as a critical component of India’s Act East Policy, serving as more than just a geographic boundary. He credited the soldiers for their consistent performance across battlefield operations, disaster response efforts, and high-altitude management. Reflecting on the evolving nature of the military, he remarked that the increasing presence of women in the forces illustrates how India balances modern institutional advancement with its core cultural values.
The event was attended by senior leadership, including Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia. Singh concluded by thanking the troops for their dedication, noting that the nation remains indebted to their constant vigilance and service to humanity.
