Guwahati: Former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia sent a letter to Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass this Thursday. He wants the Speaker to guard parliamentary traditions. Saikia pointed to reports from July 14 stating Dass attended a BJP Core Committee meeting at the Basistha office on July 13. He argues that participating in a party meeting while holding a constitutional office breaks historical convention. The Assam Legislative Assembly dates back to 1937. It is a long history.
Saikia also took aim at behavior during Question Hour and Zero Hour. He claims ministers dodge questions with sarcasm or threats. Minister Pijush Hazarika allegedly challenged the opposition on government action during his tenure. The Finance Minister similarly asked members if they wanted probes into tax evasion. Saikia believes these responses mock democratic principles. He cited Article 164(3) of the Constitution regarding the duty of ministers. He wrote: "Ministers take an oath to discharge their duties without fear, favour, affection or ill-will."
Televised footage showing insults hurts public trust. Saikia asked the Speaker to review current session proceedings. He wants a directive to ensure ministerial decisions follow the law rather than political whims. The former leader requested strict measures against intimidation and sarcasm. He suggested an all-party meeting to restore decorum and accountability in the House.
