Shillong: Meghalaya finished at the bottom of the national Performance Grading Index. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wants change. He chaired a high-level meeting Tuesday to force improvements across the state's struggling education sector.
The Union Ministry of Education placed Meghalaya in the lowest category this past May. The state scored a dismal 417.9 out of 1,000 points. That only marks a slight bump from the 401.6 score recorded in 2022-23. The state trailed almost every other region in the country.
The government identified several gaps. School infrastructure and basic amenities remain major hurdles. Poor data quality and slow reporting also dragged down the numbers. The Education Department is now assigning senior officers to track specific performance metrics. These officials must manage everything from teacher qualifications to digital attendance and student health check-ups.
Director of DERT Jacqueline Una Kharpuri now oversees teacher training and learning outcomes. Other staff will handle school facilities and the PM-POSHAN meal program. The administration demands better results. Officials have been directed to "ensure timely data collection, verification, submission, and necessary interventions to improve performance in their assigned domains."
