Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly has officially appointed senior Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury as the Leader of the Opposition. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass confirmed the selection on June 2, marking a formal step for the state's legislative proceedings.
This appointment follows a May 26 decision by the Congress Legislature Party to elect Choudhury as its leader. During the same session, the party named Joy Prakash Das as the deputy leader. Choudhury will now serve as the primary opposition voice in the 126-member assembly.
The role comes in the wake of state elections where the National Democratic Alliance secured a dominant victory. The coalition, consisting of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Asom Gana Parishad, and the Bodoland People's Front, won 102 seats. The BJP holds the largest share with 82 seats, while its allies each hold 10.
The Congress party remains the largest opposition bloc with 19 seats. Other groups in the assembly include the Raijor Dal with two seats, the All India United Democratic Front with two seats, and the Trinamool Congress with one seat. As the new opposition leader, Choudhury will be responsible for representing these perspectives on governance and legislative matters.
