Shillong: Titosstarwell Chyne wants action in Sohra. The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council opposition leader blasted the state government for failing to open Science and Commerce streams at Sohra Government College. Officials promised these additions by the 2024-25 academic year, but the 2026-27 session is already underway with no progress.
Students are paying the price. Many families lack the cash to send their children to Shillong for a better education. Chyne stated, "The delay has disadvantaged students from economically weaker backgrounds who cannot afford to move to Shillong for higher studies."
The issue hits the local Higher Secondary School too. It only offers an Arts curriculum, forcing kids to settle or leave town. Chyne also flagged the school’s temporary building as a safety hazard. He called the structure dilapidated and unfit for students, demanding the government build a permanent facility immediately. The Education Department has yet to respond to his push for better local infrastructure.
