Kohima: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to oversee the signing of a landmark tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday evening in New Delhi. The agreement brings together the central government, the state of Assam, and the state of Nagaland to facilitate the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas along their shared border.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan will attend the ceremony at the Ministry of Home Affairs. This initiative aims to unlock significant hydrocarbon reserves that have remained largely untapped for decades due to historical territorial disputes between the two neighbouring states.
Officials stated that the pact serves as a major step toward fostering regional cooperation and economic development. By creating a formal framework for joint exploration, revenue sharing, and the maintenance of law and order, the government hopes to build trust and stabilize the border region. The project is expected to attract investment from both public and private energy firms, which will likely create new jobs and improve local infrastructure.
The move aligns with India's broader national energy strategy to increase domestic production and reduce import reliance. According to officials, the initiative reflects the central government's focus on "cooperative governance and regional development" while addressing the long-term energy needs of the Northeast.
