Kohima: The Central Nagaland Tribes Council is fighting back. They demanded the Nagaland government stop the intimidation of temporary residents during the current House Listing and Population Census in Kohima. Officials are allegedly threatening people who have already finished the census in their home districts.
Reports suggest authorities are using the census as a weapon. They are linking registration to the denial of essential items like Ration Cards and Residential Certificates. The council slammed these tactics as unlawful. They argued these actions violate the Census Act of 1948 and basic constitutional rights regarding freedom of movement and residency.
CNTC Vice President Temjen I Jamir and Secretary Rhontsuthung Kikon sent a formal letter to the Chief Secretary. They want a firm stop to these threats. The council demanded that access to public services stays separate from where a person chooses to register. They warned that failure to act will destroy public trust.
The council emphasized that the capital belongs to every citizen regardless of their tribe. They called for an end to the fear. As stated in their report: "No citizen should be subjected to coercion, intimidation, or undue pressure during the census process. Essential public services and official documents must not be made conditional upon census registration at a temporary place of residence unless expressly provided by law."
The group expects the District Administration to follow strict guidelines. They want a public promise that every resident can live in Kohima without fear. The council remains willing to assist with the census if the state provides a fair, lawful environment.
