Kohima: Bloomfield Hill Higher Secondary School continued its Summer Camp 2026 this week under the theme Explosion of Mind. The program focuses on equipping students with essential life skills through a variety of interactive educational sessions.
A primary focus of the second day was a presentation titled Substance Abuse: A Threat to Youth and Future. Dr. Gihuka V. Chishi, a medical officer based in Atoizu, spoke to older students about the rising prevalence of substance misuse. He described the practice as the persistent use of harmful items despite clear risks to physical health, relationships, and professional prospects.
Dr. Chishi warned that common substances such as tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and inhalants damage vital organs including the heart, brain, and liver. He identified major contributing factors for young people, ranging from peer pressure and curiosity to family issues and social media influence. Addressing the students, he said, "Though you may not be using substances yourself, you may have friends, relatives or neighbours who are struggling with it. We must be prepared to make the right choices and help others do the same."
The session encouraged students to resist negative influences and actively share information about these dangers with their peers. By emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making, the medical officer urged participants to prioritize healthy lifestyles and become responsible members of their communities.
