Shillong: Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak fired back at the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council on Sunday. He spotted a glaring error on official receipts and the council logo. The word autonomous is missing. Marak claims this erasure threatens the identity of the constitutional body.

He sees a pattern here. Other labels like Garo Hills District Council have popped up in records for years. Marak suspects a deliberate push to weaken the council and force more dependence on the state government. He argued that the current shift is inconsistent with the legal status granted by the Sixth Schedule.

Marak did not mince words about the institutional decay. He said, "The issue was not an isolated development but part of a broader trend seen under different Executive Committees over the years."

The BJP leader wants the current leadership to fix the records now. Critics have long accused the National People's Party of mismanaging council funds. They also worry the body is being downgraded to a basic administrative office. Everyone is waiting to see if the Executive Committee reinstates the original name.
