Shillong: The state BJP is taking aim at the government over contract awards. They want officials to ditch the practice of handing massive public projects to outside companies. Instead, they say, the work should go to local firms that have already proven they can handle the job.
BJP Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang spoke out on Monday regarding Public Health Engineering projects worth roughly Rs 1,900 crore. He pressed the NPP-led MDA Government to break these deals into smaller pieces. He believes this move would keep funds inside the state while ending the current lack of transparency.
Kharkrang dismissed government claims that the current tendering process is fair. He argued that officials have no reason to avoid splitting these contracts. He stated, "If local contractors can undertake the work, the project must be split rather than giving it in wholesale to outside companies by depriving local contractors who have proved their mettle every time."
The push comes as questions swirl about favouritism. Local contractors feel shut out. The party hopes this shift will foster regional growth instead of sending money away.
