Shillong: A chunk of the Shillong-Dawki road near Laitlyngkot vanished Monday after a massive landslide. The road collapse sparked fresh panic. The state BJP is now demanding a formal probe into why the construction site keeps failing.
BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang wants answers. He questioned if the contractors possess the skills required for high-altitude work. “We must know whether the excavation was done properly and also whether the company executing the work have the expertise to work in hilly areas,” he said. He added that methods used in the plains do not work on these steep slopes.
Residents blame the joint venture between YFC Projects and ACE Construction. Locals claim the crews dumped rocks and debris into natural streams. This blockage forced water to spill over and eat away at the embankment. Past failures on this road have already cost lives, adding pressure on the government to force a fix.
The SDO of Pynursla issued a warning to stay away from the site. The ground remains unstable. Authorities fear more debris could fall or the road could collapse further. Commuters should avoid the Laitlyngkot-Lyngkyrdem route entirely. Use the Pynursla-Dawki-Amlarem or Pynursla-Nongjri-Sohra roads instead.
