Guwahati: Villagers in Assam's Chirang district are facing significant travel disruptions after rising floodwaters in the Nangalbhanga River destroyed their only bamboo bridge. The structure served as a vital link for daily commutes and access to essential services for several surrounding communities.
With the bridge gone, residents must now navigate the river using small country boats. Locals warn that these temporary measures are dangerous, especially as the monsoon season continues to impact water levels. The incident has reignited long-standing frustrations regarding the lack of permanent infrastructure in the region.
Community members claim that previous political leaders, including former Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary and current Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, failed to deliver on repeated promises to build a lasting bridge. Residents stated, "Despite assurances from political leaders, no permanent bridge has been built." The community is now intensifying its demand for a reliable, safe crossing to restore connectivity to the area.
