Guwahati: The Assam government will launch a major afforestation campaign on June 5 to mark World Environment Day. Officials aim to plant one crore saplings across the state with the active support of over 35 lakh women belonging to various Self-Help Groups.

Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora announced the initiative in Guwahati, framing the project as a key effort to maintain ecological balance. He noted that the drive aligns with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's broader focus on sustainable development, which includes forest reclamation, the use of clean energy, and modern conservation technology.

To prepare for the event, Minister Bora held a planning session with senior leadership from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and representatives from the Environment and Forest Department. He directed staff to establish robust monitoring systems and ensure widespread public involvement to guarantee the campaign's success.

The review meeting also touched upon ongoing regional programs, including the Lakhpati Baideo scheme. Senior officials in attendance included Additional Chief Secretary B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, Mission Director Kuntalmoni Sarma Bordoloi, and additional forestry representatives, including Hirdesh Mishra. This coordinated effort represents a significant step in the state government's push to expand Assam's green footprint through community engagement.
