Guwahati: Assam marked World Turtle Day on May 23 by spotlighting its role as a primary haven for turtle diversity. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state is home to 21 of India's 31 turtle species, making it a critical region for their survival. With nearly 70 percent of global turtle species facing extinction due to habitat loss and environmental degradation, local authorities have stepped up efforts to protect these vulnerable reptiles.

The Assam Forest Department, in collaboration with the Assam State Zoo and State CAMPA, is focusing on temple ponds as vital sanctuaries. These sites host approximately 16 turtle species and serve as unique environments for reproduction. Conservationists are currently improving basking and breeding areas within these ponds to ensure the long-term survival of the populations.

Beyond physical habitat improvements, the initiative aims to educate local communities and temple authorities about the ecological and spiritual value of turtles. By linking the protection of these animals to the Kurma avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology, officials hope to foster a deeper connection between conservation and cultural identity.

Officials also expressed concern regarding the invasive red-eared slider turtle. Often introduced through the pet trade, this non-native species threatens indigenous turtles by competing for food and living space. Through targeted awareness campaigns, the state hopes to safeguard its rare freshwater turtle populations against these invasive pressures and environmental threats.
