Guwahati: Two members of a counterfeit currency racket took bullets to their legs in Assam on Thursday night. Police opened fire after Matibur Rahman and Maksidul Alam tried to bolt during a recovery operation near Laluk. They were in custody to help police find more fake notes.

Lakhimpur SSP Gunendra Deka said the men asked to use a toilet but made a break for it instead. Officers fired warning shots before aiming for the legs. Deka stated, "The accused allegedly ignored the warnings and continued to run." Both suspects now face treatment at Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital.

This case traces back to a July 7 bust in Bangalmora where officers seized 3 lakh rupees in fake cash. Since then, the net has widened. Police have arrested multiple suspects, including a man named Ainul Haque who investigators identified as the kingpin of the group known as the Ambani Gang.

Authorities have intercepted over 36 lakh rupees in counterfeit bills during recent operations. Investigators believe the network circulated nearly 100 crore rupees in fake currency. They suspect the notes originate outside the state and may have cross-border ties. Police continue to hunt for remaining syndicate members across the region.
