Crime Wave Hits Meghalaya: Thefts, Scams, and Harassment Reported

Shillong: A string of criminal complaints hit police stations across Meghalaya this week. Thieves are targeting shops, schools, and private vehicles with alarming regularity.

In East Khasi Hills, a woman reported that her ex-husband, Amir Kharkongor, terrorized her at her shop on July 8. He allegedly harassed her, broke a window, and smashed merchandise. The woman stated he threatened her with "dire consequences."

Property crimes are spiking. Thieves cleared out a Laban residence on July 5, making off with gold worth Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh in cash. In Laitumkhrah, another shop owner reported a break-in on July 7 where intruders stole Rs 6 lakh. Schools are not safe either. Miscreants hit the Chandigre Anganwadi Centre and Phulbari SSA Upper Primary School in West Garo Hills, stealing cooking equipment and supplies.

Vehicle crimes are rampant. A laptop was swiped from a car in Laban, while another resident lost car tapes from two vehicles in Upper Shillong. In South West Garo Hills, locals nearly caught cattle thieves on July 8. The suspects ditched their Maruti Alto and a cow to escape capture. Livestock was also stolen from Mawlyntriang village.

Financial scams continue to drain accounts. Fraudsters cheated victims out of thousands by promising government jobs or through unauthorized bank transactions. Meanwhile, police and BSF personnel apprehended two suspected Bangladeshi nationals, Md. Rakibul Hussain and Md. Mamon Ali, on a bus in Jengjal Bazar. Authorities are processing these complaints as investigations continue.
