Guwahati: The old Saraighat Bridge shuts down to all traffic starting at 5 am on July 13. Northeast Frontier Railway crews are moving in to handle urgent restoration work on the span. Expect this closure to grind on for at least two months. All vehicles must shift to the new Saraighat Bridge, which will handle two-way traffic flow to manage the load.

Heavy motor vehicles, except for passenger buses, must avoid the bridge entirely. These trucks moving between Lower and Upper Assam face a long detour through the Baihata Chariali to Kaliabor Tiniali route. Commercial goods carriers cannot enter or leave Guwahati via the new bridge between 6 am and 10 pm. Authorities strictly prohibit parking on both sides of the road between Jalukbari and the Saraighat Bridge for the duration of the project.

Light motor vehicles moving from Lower to Upper Assam should cross via the new bridge or pick the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu to dodge the worst bottlenecks. The Guwahati Traffic Police has appealed to commuters to follow traffic regulations, maintain lane discipline and cooperate with on-duty personnel to ensure the smooth movement of vehicles during the repair work. Travelers heading to the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport need to leave early. Officials will check the status of the road work on July 31 and decide on next steps then.
