Guwahati: Asom Gana Parishad MLA Dharmeswar Roy defended the Assam government’s push to ban polygamy this Saturday. The move aims to fix deep-rooted social friction. Roy claims these changes will boost long-term public welfare. He insists the state wants to move past outdated habits that hurt families.
The policy targets specific groups. State employees and welfare recipients are now on notice. Roy clarified the government's stance on these individuals during his address. "Some government servicemen are indulging in polygamy. There are also beneficiaries in our society who are involved in such practices. The government is giving a warning to these servicemen and beneficiaries," Roy said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma views the ban as a way to build awareness for younger generations. It remains a top priority for his administration. Officials argue the law will stop practices deemed harmful to the state. Roy believes the state is moving toward a better future. It is a bold move. The government plans to keep pushing this legal reform despite the debate.
