Assam Starts Evictions for Kamakhya Temple Corridor Project

Guwahati: Assam officials started clearing the way for the Kamakhya Corridor project. Workers tore down roadside shops along the main road leading up to the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill. This marks the first move in a 498-crore infrastructure overhaul funded by the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region.

Millions of devotees visit this site every year. The government wants to fix the congestion and add better civic amenities for these pilgrims. Planners insist they will modernize the area while keeping the original spirit of the shrine intact.

Authorities held talks with the Kamakhya Temple management committee and nearby residents before bringing in the crews. Officials said the work "commenced only after extensive consultations" with the parties involved. The state expects this project to drive up local business once the new corridor is finished.
