Shillong: Assam is cutting power costs. Over 17 percent of local homes using the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana no longer pay monthly electricity bills. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the milestone on Thursday.

The state ranks among the top five performers nationwide for the rooftop solar program. Households generate their own power while tapping into government subsidies to offset installation costs. The initiative slashes energy expenses for families across the region.

Sarma praised the program for its measurable impact on state infrastructure. "The transformation brought about by PM Surya Ghar in Assam is evident, with 17.6 per cent of solar-powered households paying zero electricity bills," he said.

State officials are pushing for more installations to boost renewable capacity. The program reduces reliance on conventional power sources. It remains a core piece of the state's plan to provide cheap, sustainable energy to its residents.
