Guwahati: Assam has recorded a major improvement in child health outcomes as its Infant Mortality Rate has fallen from 49 in 2004 to 29 in 2024. The data reflects a significant decline in the number of deaths among children under one year of age per 1,000 live births over the last twenty years.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma credited the progress to enhanced healthcare infrastructure and more effective welfare programs. He noted that the state has prioritized better access to maternal and child health services to reduce mortality rates.
Reflecting on the achievement, Sarma stated, "A decade ago, too many families in Assam faced the heartbreak of losing a child in infancy. Today, our Infant Mortality Rate has fallen from 49 in 2004 to 29 in 2024, driven by stronger mother-and-child healthcare facilities, better services and welfare schemes."
While the Chief Minister described these results as encouraging, he acknowledged that further efforts are necessary to continue improving the state's health indicators. The government remains focused on strengthening healthcare delivery to build on these recent gains.
