Guwahati: An aerial photograph showcasing the traditional Bagurumba dance of Assam has earned international recognition after being selected for the BBC’s list of the nine most striking images of 2026. The photo captured a record-breaking performance at Sarusajai Stadium on January 17, where nearly 10,000 members of the Bodo community gathered to perform the cultural dance.
The BBC lauded the visual impact of the event, describing the dancers' formations as an "uninterrupted tapestry of vibrant hues" while drawing artistic comparisons to the geometric works of Piet Mondrian. This massive display was launched under the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to promote the visibility of Bodo culture to a global audience.
Assam Cabinet Minister Bimal Borah expressed pride in the achievement, stating that the recognition effectively highlights the state's cultural depth and traditions. Often referred to as the Butterfly Dance, the Bagurumba is a staple of the Bwisagu festival. It represents harmony, joy, and a fundamental connection to the natural world, and this recent feature has further solidified its place on the international stage.
