Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major improvement in the state's public health metrics this Saturday. According to state data, the infant mortality rate has fallen from 49 in 2004 to 29 in 2024.

Sarma credited this progress to bolstered maternal and child healthcare infrastructure throughout the region. He noted that expanded access to medical services, combined with targeted welfare initiatives, has played a pivotal role in reducing infant deaths over the past two decades.

While describing the downward trend as encouraging, the Chief Minister emphasized that the state must maintain its momentum. He stated, "Continued efforts are needed to further improve health outcomes in the state."
