Guwahati: Two orphaned Asiatic black bear cubs have returned to the wild following their successful release into Dehing Patkai National Park. This milestone marks the first time rehabilitated cubs from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation in Kaziranga have been reintroduced in this specific region.

The cubs were discovered alone in the Dissol Reserved Forest in February 2025. After local authorities intervened, the animals were transferred to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation for specialized treatment. Dr. Bhaskar Choudhury and his veterinary team managed their recovery, focusing on hydration and nurturing the cubs while ensuring they retained natural behaviors.

To prepare for life in the wild, the team followed protocols designed to minimize human imprinting. Authorities selected Dehing Patkai National Park as the release site after a scientific survey confirmed the area offered dense vegetation and minimal human interference. The Chief Wildlife Warden of Assam granted formal approval for the release in June 2025.

The cubs were moved to their new home on February 4, 2026, with the assistance of forest staff. Reflecting on the broader impact of the mission, officials emphasized that the project stands as a testament to "science-driven rehabilitation, ethical wildlife management, and community involvement." The Chief Minister's Office later highlighted the effort as a significant conservation achievement for the state.
