Guwahati: The Assam Premier League begins as planned on August 1. It runs through August 23. While the state recovers from devastating floods, BCCI Joint Secretary Devajit Lon Saikia has ordered the Assam Cricket Association to keep the event low-key.
Saikia specifically asked organizers to ditch any grand opening ceremonies or flashy entertainment programs. The situation on the ground remains dire. He noted, "My only request is that the ACA should not do it in a very grand way because the present situation in Assam is not conducive to holding entertainment programmes."
Postponing was never an option. Preparations are finished, and there is no room to reschedule after August 23. The domestic cricket calendar kicks off immediately after the league ends, packing the schedule through May 2027 alongside the Indian Premier League. Saikia warned that missing this window would leave the tournament stalled for eight months.
The ACA already stepped up to help. They donated Rs 50 lakh to relief efforts on July 24. Saikia expects the association to keep backing flood-hit communities while they host the games in a restrained manner.
