Guwahati: Unscientific coal mining and illegal dumping have pushed Ledo Jharnabasti to the brink. Deep cracks split houses and roads. Nearly 60 families face a looming landslide threat in the Margherita Co-District of Assam. Residents report that mining waste blocked natural streams, forcing water into unstable ground.
A Communist Party of India delegation visited the site on Thursday. Led by state council member Sanjeev Gangooly, the group inspected the damage. Gangooly slammed the Union government, the Assam state government, and the North Eastern Coalfields of Coal India Limited for their negligence. He argued that greed is driving these risks. "Unscientific mining carried out in the name of development had created serious threats for local communities," Gangooly said.
The CPI demanded an immediate scientific survey to measure the structural damage. They are pushing for fair compensation and the relocation of all families living in the path of a potential slide. Local officials remained silent. Attempts to reach the Margherita Co-District Administration and North Eastern Coalfields representatives for comment failed.
