Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia opened the new pavilion at Jalan Outdoor Stadium in Dibrugarh on Saturday. The project stands as a major upgrade for local sports infrastructure. The Dibrugarh District Sports Association led the construction with financial backing from Oil India Limited.
Saikia sees big potential here. He told the media that the city could become Assam's second international cricket venue. "The possibility of developing an international cricket stadium there could be explored in the coming years, with support from the state government and public sector undertakings such as Oil India Limited and ONGC," he stated. Plans already include hosting Ranji Trophy matches this January.
The BCCI official singled out local talent Sunil Lachit and Mukhtar as players with a bright future. He wants to see them in the national blue jersey soon. Sonowal, who leads the Assam Olympic Association, reminisced about his own days playing on the field.
A long list of officials attended the ceremony. Attendees included Assam Cricket Association president Taranga Gogoi, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, and Oil India Limited representatives Ankur Baruah, Sanjay Verma, and Anupam Deka. Assam Tourism Development Corporation chairman Rituparna Barua and APL chairman Bikul Deka also showed up. This rebuild makes it easier to run events and supports the next generation of Upper Assam athletes.
