Guwahati: Assam reached a major environmental milestone on June 5 by planting more than 1.2 crore saplings in just eight hours. The massive statewide initiative took place to mark World Environment Day, representing a significant boost to the region's green cover.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on the social media platform X, praising the effort as a new record for the state. He highlighted the essential role of women in the campaign, noting that the drive was largely driven by members of local Self-Help Groups working alongside government staff, volunteers, and community members.
Reflecting on the success of the operation, Sarma stated, "Assam achieves a historic milestone! In just over 8 hours, over 1.2 crore saplings have been planted by the people, in an effort led by Assam's enterprising Nari Shakti, setting a new record in our greening efforts."
This large-scale afforestation project serves as part of a broader government strategy to promote sustainable development and encourage public participation in conservation. By mobilizing lakhs of participants, the state aims to continue its focus on expanding its natural landscape through community-led action.
