Guwahati: Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has officially requested that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rename the historic railway town of Badarpur as Siddheshwar Dham. While the Chief Minister has responded to the suggestion with interest, the state government has not yet made a formal decision regarding the proposal.

Purkayastha stated that the name change is part of a broader development plan for the town. He emphasized that the initiative is not politically motivated, nor is it linked to his recent election victory. The MLA plans to engage in public consultations with local residents and stakeholders before moving forward with any official changes.

The proposed name carries spiritual significance for the region, though the idea may face scrutiny due to the town's long-standing identity. Badarpur is recognized as one of the oldest settlements in the Barak Valley and serves as a major railway junction. It is also home to a prominent Pir-Sannyasi shrine, which is widely regarded as a local symbol of communal harmony and shared cultural traditions.

Addressing potential concerns, Purkayastha expressed confidence that the public would appreciate the intent behind the proposal. He maintained that as an elected representative, he has a responsibility to foster development while simultaneously honoring the civilizational and spiritual history of the region.
