Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the Northeast region has successfully transitioned from a narrative of instability to one of development and opportunity. Speaking at the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council in Shillong, Sarma emphasized that the region now serves as a gateway to Southeast Asia, moving beyond its historical perception as being distant from mainland India.

Sarma identified Assam as the primary economic anchor for the Northeast, citing significant progress in sectors such as inland waterways, industrial corridors, hospitality, and semiconductors. He credited the North Eastern Council for facilitating this growth by funding the construction of 10,500 kilometers of roads and 2,500 kilometers of power transmission infrastructure.

The shift in the region's focus was a central theme at the plenary session, which included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, state governors, and various officials. Regarding this change, Sarma stated, "As Adarniya Amit Shah ji observed at the NEC plenary, the focus can now shift from law and order to protecting citizens' rights and accelerating development."

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister advocated for integrated infrastructure and shared regional cooperation rather than isolated state-level planning. He highlighted that the Northeast is actively preparing for future global demands by focusing on advanced sectors like artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain technology, foreign trade, and health tourism.
