Guwahati: The Assam cabinet has officially increased the MLA Local Area Development fund to support more balanced growth across state constituencies. Legislators will see their annual allocations rise to Rs 1.5 crore for the 2026-27 period, reaching Rs 2 crore starting in 2027-28.

Officials confirmed this decision during the first cabinet meeting following the June 5 ministry expansion. The state government stated the enhanced allocation is intended to help legislators undertake additional local infrastructure and community projects.

New amendments to the program guidelines now permit lawmakers to spend up to 10 per cent of their annual budget on specialized equipment. This includes resources for educational, cultural, sports, and disability-support initiatives. According to the official announcement, the revised structure will provide legislators with greater flexibility in addressing specific local development needs while expanding support for community welfare. As the government noted, this policy change aims to enable legislators to undertake additional local infrastructure and community projects.
