Guwahati: The Fishery Department in Assam launched a major enforcement operation on June 4 to combat illegal fishing in the Brahmaputra River. Led by Kamrup District Fishery Development Officer Dr. Sanjay Sharma, the team targeted stretches near Acholpara Zero Point in the Goroimari Development Block to protect local aquatic biodiversity.
Authorities initiated the raid after receiving complaints about fishermen violating the seasonal ban, which prohibits fishing from April 1 to July 15 to allow for successful spawning. Working alongside Goroimari Police, the department seized 105 fish traps and numerous nets used for capturing brood and spawn fish. During the operation, the team rescued several species of fish from the traps and released them back into the water.
Officials stated that the illegal gear posed a significant threat to aquatic life and fish populations during the critical breeding period. The operation involved the use of mechanized boats to reach affected areas and received support from local residents and various department personnel, including Assistant Fishery Officer Rajen Das.
The department warned that more raids are planned to ensure compliance with the ongoing ban. Moving forward, the agency remains committed to protecting the river's ecological balance. Officials reiterated the department's commitment to safeguarding fish resources and maintaining ecological sustainability in the Brahmaputra.
