Kohima: Assam officials claim Nagaland holds 59,490 hectares of state land. This figure accounts for over 71 percent of the total territory Assam says four neighboring states occupy. Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora presented these numbers to the Assam Legislative Assembly on July 8.
The dispute involves land across four districts. Golaghat takes the largest hit at 36,294 hectares. Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo also report significant losses. The minister clarified the status of these claims. He noted, "the Assam-Nagaland border dispute remains pending before the Supreme Court of India through Original Suit No. 2 of 1988, instituted by the Government of Assam and the matter remains sub judice before the apex court."
Chief ministers from both states continue to hold talks. They hope for a negotiated resolution. Meanwhile, the Union Government, Assam, and Nagaland signed a tripartite deal in June 2026. This agreement covers crude oil and gas exploration in the region.
Assam reports total losses of 82,751 hectares to neighbors including Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Meghalaya. Progress varies by state. Officials confirmed nearly 300 kilometers of the Arunachal border recently. Surveys will restart after the monsoon season. The state government maintains it will seek solutions through bilateral agreements and home ministry oversight.
