Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached across the aisle on July 7, thanking the opposition for backing the state's war on drugs. He demanded a united front to scrub the menace from society. The two sides found common ground during a rare, constructive debate at the Assam Legislative Assembly budget session.
Sarma signaled that the velvet glove is coming off. He promised that state police will ramp up pressure on dealers and traffickers. "There will be times when the police need to act strictly against the drug menace," he said.
The Chief Minister also sounded the alarm on a darker problem lurking within the recovery system. He flagged reports that certain de-addiction centers have turned into supply hubs for narcotics. "At times, even de-addiction centres supply drugs," Sarma noted. He vowed the government will keep these facilities clean and hold them to account. Solving this crisis requires total cooperation, he said, as drugs remain a toxic social evil that ignores party lines.
